Artificial Sportsmen

My father grew up dirt poor in the south during the 20s and 30s.  He spent many an hour out shooting a rabbit, or squirrel, or maybe quail for dinner.  He was lucky and developed a good career, so we were comfortable, but he never had an urge as an adult, ever, to hunt.  He always viewed the shooting he did when he was young as a chore and never understood the “sportsman” aspect of it.

When did hunting become a sport?
